In the midst of a national pandemic, Congress has largely failed the American people. Senator Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate caucus have been sitting on the HEROES Act for 9 weeks and decided to ignore the proposal from the Democratic controlled House of Representatives. The reasoning was that when the bill was passed, the Republican Party wanted to see the effects of the stimulus passed up until that point, which was a reasonable request. However, about 6 weeks ago it was blatantly obvious that Science was winning and we had no control over the Corona Virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci had warned politicians that reopening the economy was a risky move and would not work out well and what did they do, the largely ignored his advice and went against the Science, because as we know the Republican Party does not believe in Science. As a result, the Covid cases have spiked rapidly all over the country, forcing many states to roll back their re-openings and leaving the economy in a fragile environment. This was evident 6 weeks ago, but Congress in particular the Republican Party was in full denialism mode. Ignoring reality they took a two week break and said they would hash out details of the Cares Act when they came back from their break. A stupid idea to say the least and now we sit here with enhanced unemployment benefits about to expire and an economy that is shedding jobs once again, because you can tell people to go out and live, but you can’t force them to. Now the Senate Republican caucus can not agree on a proposal amongst themselves and have not even started negotiations with Democrats. A minority of their caucus sees the writing on the wall that Americans are hurting and the enhanced unemployment benefits have been the best aspect of the stimulus package passed so far, but their inability to break free from their big moneyed backers has left them leaving the American people out to hang. I can name on one hand the Senators who believe in reality, Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley and Mitt Romney, who have largely called for helping out Americans. They were easy to pass a trillion dollar stimulus package to their corporate donors, but now they believe Americans are lazy and trying to game the system and don’t want to work, so they want to reduce the benefits. They largely believe Americans are trying to steal money from the government, when in reality Americans are simply asking for Congress to help them like they helped corporate America. I have no faith in either political party because they are both bought and paid for by corporate interests, but the Republican Party is by far the more inept and corrupt party willing to let Americans starve and perish over an economic belief system that has largely proven to be failed. This is what happens when you think trickle down economics is a bright idea, you get mass incompetence and a lack of connection to the voters who are screaming for help.
