End the Filibuster
The filibuster should be ended in the United States Senate plain and simple, once and for all. The Senate is an institution that is designed to stall progress and not force Senators to make tough decisions. The 60 vote threshold is an impediment to the progress for the American people. Every year we talk about the filibuster and how it stalls progress for things most Americans support, but only a few people known as Senators oppose.
Such is the case now, with over 80% of Americans supporting enhanced stimulus packages that are highlighted by a $2000 check to struggling Americans. However, because of the stupidity of Senators on both sides of the aisle, this will probably not happen, with the filibuster being a key reason as to why not. Senators Joe Manchin and Kristal Synema have stated that they oppose ending the filibuster, seemingly because they are what we call centrists, but in reality they are radical members of Congress who enact legislation to benefit the wealthy donors who fund their campaigns.
We consider Medicare for all, enhanced stimulus payments, unions getting stronger and a litany of common sense issues radical, because we have been fed bullshit by both political parties that ensure we are beholden to wealthy corporations and idolize stingy and greedy wealthy Americans. The filibuster allows members of both political parties to not make tough decisions and tough votes, because they can simply say they were not close to the 60 votes required to pass major legislation.
The filibuster was designed to harm the vast majority of Americans who are not wealthy and who are not elite, it protects the elite and well connected political class and benefits their benefactors. Ending the filibuster is a patriotic duty and one that needs to happen tomorrow. With members such as corporatists like Synema and Manchin, the American people will be forced to endure many more months of economic devastation simply because the political class cares more about prestige and the institution than the starving American people.
